MCHS Athletics Brings Home the Region Director’s Cup

A banner year for Morgan County High School Athletics was capped at May’s region meeting when the Bulldogs were named the winner of the 2016-2017 8-AAA Director’s Cup.

The award, sponsored by Regions Bank and governed by the Georgia Athletic Director’s Association, recognizes athletic departments “that have excelled and show superior performance.”

Morgan County athletic teams earned 821 points throughout the school year, which was over 300 points ahead of the region runner-up.  Schools earn points based on the eight highest scoring teams for each gender.  Points are accumulated based on the individual team’s finish at the state level. MCHS boys teams collected a total of 363 points, while female sports accounted for 458 points.  Both genders led the way in 8-AAA.

Morgan County’s claim of the 2016-2017 Region Director’s Cup is its first since it picked up the top spot in region 4-AA for the 2011-2012 school year.

At the state level, Morgan County will finish in the top ten for the AAA classification, as the boys currently hold onto ninth place while the girls have finished sixth overall.

Morgan County athletic teams picked up eight region championships this year as well as runner-up finishes in six sports.  Region championships were claimed in Football, Volleyball, Competition Cheerleading, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Baseball, Boys Soccer, and Girls Tennis.
